Deadlines
There is nothing like a deadline for an artist to find her (or his) muse quickly. In all the rush to get things done my sketched out rooster is going to have to get all the spare time I have this week save for my sons birthday. Then he needs to get sent to the scanner and printer as quickly as possible and then get matted and framed and ready to hang. My boys are on the same deadline - but I did that on purpose. One week is plenty of time for them to come up with something brilliant and beautiful and focused on the show - whereas if I had made them create it a month ago it would have gotten lost, hidden, destroyed, or they would decide two days before the show they want to create something different. When they get older I'll have them start planning when I do so they don't have to rush (now not being the right example) but until then their best work is done when I work due to the inspiration. Now I just have to find a way to get them to draw something OTHER than a rooster - something of their own design and creative ideas. I want their wonderful fantastic creative force to shine in their own lights - they are night and day different on their ideas and concepts - I really really want that to show for this. I want them to be proud of what they create, and enjoy the spotlight. Regardless of wether they become artists in their lifetime, they will know when they want to create it's worth the effort and attention it will bring them - even briefly. I am a huge believer that every walk of life should have a creative outlet that is their own to express in public or private that allows them to channel the energy of the day, week, month, holiday, moment to keep themselves open minded and connected to the creative force that flows through all of us. I really don't care if a corporate lawyer can only draw stick figures - if he/she is having a bad day - make a cartoon - get it out so it doesn't become toxic!! If nothing else - I hope to pass that natural ability to channel the energy onto the page to my boys, and the innate knowledge that it's okey dokey regardless of what ANYONE says. We can all be critics - but so very few can harness that childlike energy to smear paint and just go with the flow after we become adults - no matter how much we want to. That crazy idea to grab a pencil and draw the baby - no matter if it looks like a morphed elephant when were done. It's not the end result that is the focus - it's the process. If you want a perfect picture keep at it - your desire will drive you to make that line this way, or notice the highlight here or there. But for a moment - it's a doodle, and it feeels WONDERFUL when your done. If you don't think it looks good - stick it in a folder for you to remember - because that moment becomes a wonderful memory and a permanent one. If your reading this - grab a childhood favorite medium - and just DO it - like Niki says. It's worth your time and effort to cater to your heart and soul!

Happy Creating!!
